TEMPE, Ariz. – With the 2019 season kicking off next weekend, Arizona State men's tennis looks to have one last chance to tune up at the Tempe Collegiate Classic, sending two doubles tandems and five individuals to compete in the match play tournament that began today.
Held at the Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe, the Sun Devils kicked off the day by sending No. 22 Tim Ruehl/Andrea Bolla and Justin Roberts/Makey Rakotomalala to the courts to face pairs from TCU. Ruehl/Bolla fell first, 6-3, while Roberts/Rakotomalala battled into extra sets but also ultimately fell, 7-6.
Nathan Ponwith highlighted ASU in singles play, seeing action on court five against No. 69 Eduardo Roldan of TCU. Ponwith took the match in straight sets to represent his first win as a Sun Devil, 7-5, 6-1.
TCU sent two ranked in the top-70 by the Oracle/ITA to play in singles action, including Ponwith's opponent Roldan and No. 14 Alex Rybakov, who faced off against Roberts on court one. Roberts battled but lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
The Sun Devils are back in action tomorrow, facing off against opponents from Illinois in the match play tournament set for a noon first serve.
