ITHACA, NY -- After sweeping one of the most historical hockey programs in the NCAA, the No. 13 Sun Devils begin their three-series road stint this weekend in Ithaca, NY against No. 17 Cornell (7-5-1). This is the first-ever meeting with Big Red.
In the third time this season that No. 13 Arizona State (16-7-1) has traveled back east to face the Ivy League, this is the first meeting with the Big Red Bears.
Cornell is coming off a 2-2 tie against then-No. 5 Quinnipiac for their first tie of the season.
"They're very similar to us, in that they play a hard and heavy style of game and try to outwork you in every aspect of the game," said head coach Greg Powers. "This will be a phenomenal series to watch for the fans, and I anticipate one of the most challenging tests we've had this season."
Sophomore forward Morgan Barron -- a sixth round draft pick for the New York Rangers -- leads the Big Red with six goals in 13 games this season.
Cornell walks into the weekend with a top-20 power play, but the Sun Devils match their success on special teams with the eighth-ranked penalty kill in the country at 86.1%.
Sophomore forward Johnny Walker continues his stronghold atop the country with 18 goals despite being scoreless against Boston College, and leads the ASU squad with 26 points with co-captain Brinson Pasichnuk behind him with 19 points.
Between the pipes, junior netminder Joey Daccord ranks fourth in the NCAA with a .933 save percentage and leads the country with six shutouts in 16 wins for the Devils.
Cornell's Lynah Rink is said to be one of the toughest atmospheres to play in college hockey, however, classes are still not in session for the spring semester.
