TEMPE, Ariz. – Five Sun Devil men's hockey players received invites to NHL Development Camps beginning this week, including Saturday's fourth-round draft pick and incoming forward Demetrios Koumontzis.
Ottawa Senators' 2015 draft pick and rising junior Joey Daccord begins camp Tuesday, while Brinson Pasichnuk and Johnny Walker began Monday with the Arizona Coyotes and Columbus Blue Jackets, respectively. Redshirt freshman Austin Lemieux joins the Pittsburgh Penguins' development camp on Wednesday, and camp for the Calgary Flames and Koumontzis begins July 4.
"We're so proud of these five guys getting camp invitations and representing Sun Devil Hockey at the highest level," said head coach Greg Powers. "We expect all of them to gain valuable experience this week and demonstrate the level of talent our fans can expect to see on the ice this upcoming season."
Walker and Koumontzis are making their first NHL Development Camp appearances, while Daccord, Pasichnuk and Lemieux are no strangers to this experience.
Pasichnuk again demonstrated he is a two-way defenseman after leading the Sun Devils in points with 26, nearly doubling his output from his freshman season (14).
After splitting time in year one, Daccord staked his claim between the pipes with a .909 save percentage, 3.51 goals against average and led the country in saves (1084).
Lemieux redshirted his freshman season, and will suit up in the Maroon and Gold for the first time in 2018-19.
The rising sophomore, Walker, earns an invitation after a phenomenal freshman campaign. The Phoenix-native scored the second-most goals (17) of any freshman in the country with a total of 24 points.
After earning the title of highest drafted Sun Devil in program history on Saturday, Koumontzis will wear the red and black of Calgary prior to taking the ice for his first season as a Sun Devil in 2018-19. At Edina High School, he put himself in a position to win the Mr. Minnesota Hockey Award with 20 goals and 21 assists in 24 games.
