SAN FRANCISCO – For her historic outdoor season that included two NCAA records and three conference titles, Sun Devil senior Magdalyn Ewen has been named as the Pac-12 Women's Field Athlete of the Year.
The eyes of track and field were focused on Ewen this season to see how she would follow up the unprecedented success of her junior campaign that included a collegiate record, three Pac-12 titles, a national title and two more All-America honors.
Ewen didn't disappoint and one-upped herself with a sensational swan song for ASU that started with an unforgettable senior weekend at the Sun Angel Classic.
The Sun Devils' last home meet of the season was Ewen's first weekend throwing all three of her events.
She opened the weekend with a hammer throw series that extended her collegiate record to 74.53m/244-6 feet, just a few centimeters off of her personal best and the ASU school record she set at last year's U.S. Championships.
The following day, in front of a crowd sending off the Sun Devil senior class, Ewen set the NCAA-leading mark in the discus and shot put. The throw in the discus moved her into the top-three in school history, and the shot put mark of 19.22m/63-0.75 feet placed her at No. 2 all-time.
At the final regular season meet of the year, Ewen made more history as she broke the collegiate shot put record with a heave of 19.46m/63-10.25 feet.
At this year's Pac-12 Championships, she won all three of her events for the second-consecutive season, and set the Pac-12 meet record in the hammer and shot put in the process. With her seven total Pac-12 titles, Ewen is tied for the most conference crowns in history.
Ewen's season continues next weekend as she heads into the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds where she'll compete for a chance to return to Eugene and defend her hammer throw title.
