Ewen Smashes NCAA Record at Sun Angel Classic

Ewen Smashes NCAA Record at Sun Angel ClassicEwen Smashes NCAA Record at Sun Angel Classic
TEMPE – The collegiate sections of the 39th Sun Angel Classic opened with a bang as Arizona State senior Magdalyn Ewen demolished the collegiate hammer throw record three times Friday at Sun Angel Stadium.

"We had some decent practices, but she hadn't been at her best coming into today," throws coach Brian Blutreich said. "We found some things to fix and she kind of fixed them, but to be quite honest, today is just the beginning for her."

Ewen held the top-mark in history entering the meet with a throw she recorded at last season's NCAA Outdoor Championships that won her a national title in Eugene, Oregon. While her personal best of 74.56m/244-7 feet is the Arizona State school record, her collegiate record was just over a meter shy at 73.32m/240-7 feet.

Of her four throws that were measured Friday, three of them surpassed the mark from Eugene with her fifth throw nearly reaching her personal best, landing at 74.53m/244-6 feet. With her series today, Ewen now holds six of the top seven farthest throws in collegiate history, including all of the top-four.

"I see some way bigger and better things down the road in the next coming months for her, and she's putting herself in a great position to be ready to perform when it's championship season," Blutreich said. "She executed the way we wanted her to, and with what I saw today, there's way more to come if we keep working and executing like that."

The Devils had a solid showing all-around in the women's hammer throw with Kaylee Antill finishing fourth and freshman Samantha Noennig taking sixth with a personal-best 54.00m/177-2.

"Kaylee is getting healthier and getting back to her old self," Blutreich said. "She had a couple of fouls, but she had some good throws in there too.

"Sam's just learning the hammer and it's kind of her third event, so anytime you get a personal best it's never a bad thing," Blutreich said.

Antill and Noennig hold their places in the Pac-12 of fifth and 13th, respectively, and will both compete Saturday in the Discus while Noennig will also throw the shot put. Ewen will also take the ring in both events.

The track was opened for the 3,000-meter runs and steeplechases that featured 10 Devils across the four events.

Jackson Lewis improved on his personal-best mark in the steeplechase from his last outing by four seconds, earning the win by clocking a 9:24.44, and moving to seventh in the conference.

Anna Pruter and Billie Jo Dytrt took second and third, respectively in the women's running of the steeple, and freshman Daan Haven (third) and Samantha Ortega (fifth) led the way for the Sun Devil women in the 3,000.

Also in the field today, the Devils got another win from another senior in Kristiana Warth. She took first in the women's pole vault, clearing a height of 3.85m/12-7.5 feet, her best mark of the outdoor season.

Matthew Eckles and senior Grant Sisserson both cleared 5.00m/16-4.75 feet for their first marks of the season. Based on progression, Eckles took fifth and Sisserson grabbed eighth.

The Sun Angel Classic wraps up tomorrow with the remaining collegiate and premiere events, as well as the high school finals. Updates can be found on thesundevils.com, or by following @SunDevilTFXC on Twitter.
