TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 8 Sun Devil Wrestling team will start the new year playing host to No. 4 Michigan Saturday, Jan. 5 at 8 pm MT. Here are four things to know prior to the dual:
  1. Two of the top-5 wrestlers at 174 lbs. will face in the dual in #3 Myles Amine (Michigan) and #2 Zahid Valencia (ASU). Valencia is 5-0 all-time vs. Amine with three matches in the NCAA Tournament (two in 2017, one in 2018), one at the 2016 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and one in a dual at Michigan last season.
Dec. 2, 2016 – Zahid Valencia DEC Myles Amine, 4-3 (CKLV)
Mar. 16, 2017 – Zahid Valencia DEC Myles Amine, 14-8 (2017 NCAA)
Mar. 16, 2017 – Zahid Valencia MD Myles Amine, 15-5 (2017 NCAA)
Nov. 10, 2017 – Zahid Valencia DEC Myles Amine, 4-2 (Dual @ Michigan)
Mar. 15, 2018 – Zahid Valencia DEC Myles Amine, 7-5 (2018 NCAA)
  1. This is the fifth top-25 team in as many duals this season that the Sun Devils have faced this season. Up to this point, ASU has also faced three of the top-5 - #2 Ohio State in Tempe in November, #4 Michigan this weekend, and #1 Penn State in State College in December. In February, the Sun Devils will add another top-10 team in #6 Missouri.
  2. Saturday marks the first time Arizona State has hosted Michigan in Tempe. Six of the dual matches have been at neutral sites while two were home matches for Michigan. Of note, Arizona State's 200th program victory came vs. the Wolverines at Ohio State's Buckeye Duals on Jan. 5, 1985, a 28-15 win.
  3. Saturday will be the Sun Devils' "Salute to Service" match as programming will be centered around honoring those in the community who serve and have served.
