SAN FRANCISCO – The No. 20 Arizona State gymnastics squad is picked to finish seventh in the race for the 2019 Pac-12 title based on the poll voted on by the head coaches in the conference.
As the Sun Devils gymnastics program continues to grow, so does the respect from other coaches. The Gym Devils are chosen to take seventh out of the eight teams in the Pac-12, moving up one spot from their 2018 preseason poll slot of eighth. ASU is chosen ahead of in-state rival Arizona.
In 2018, the Gym Devils finished in sixth place at the Pac-12 Championships with a score of 196.425, edging out both Stanford and Arizona. This year, they are ranked No. 20 in the WCGA preseason poll, ahead of Stanford and Arizona in those rankings.
Last season, Arizona State ended the year at No. 23, improving 18 spots ahead of the 2017 finish. The Sun Devils also improved their average team score from 195.145 to 196.545. The team qualified for NCAA regionals for the first time since 2014. They sent Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year Cairo Leonard-Baker to NCAA nationals as an all-around.
The first meet of the regular season will be at Wells Fargo Arena on Jan. 4, 2019. The quad-meet will also feature No. 19 Missouri, No. 23 Minnesota and UIC.
