SURPRISE, Ariz. – In one of the last stops in their fall schedule, Tim Ruehl and Andrea Bolla of Sun Devil men's tennis notched a victory to advance to the Round of 16 in the doubles bracket at the ITA Fall Championships on Wednesday.
The 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 win across the valley came against another Pac-12 duo in No. 52 Thomas Laurent/Emmanuel Coste of Oregon. While the Duck duo didn't play together when the Sun Devils were in Eugene last April, Michaël Geerts handed then-No. 22 Laurent a loss in singles while Coste is a freshman at Oregon.
Unlike regular-season doubles matches, the doubles matchup in Surprise was a best-of-three affair in which the Devils duo found themselves down early on. Dropping the first set 6-2, Ruehl/Bolla battled back to take the second by a score of 6-4 to force a match-deciding third set.
Ruehl/Bolla cruised to an easy 10-5 victory in the third set to take the victory over the Oregon tandem.
The Devils duo is back in action this evening against yet another Pac-12 foe in Jack Davis and Piers Foley of Washington. The action is set to kick off on court 13 at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex at 5 p.m. MST. TempuZ will provide live streaming coverage from two courts at the event.
