NORMAN, Okla. – Sun Devil men's tennis junior Dominik Kellovsky battled all the way to the semi-final round of the 2018 Norman Open, dropping the match with Matej Vocel 4-6, 6-7 (5) Saturday morning.
Kellovsky opened the tournament with a pair of matches against fellow Sun Devils. The Czech notched a victory over Sun Devil for Life Michaël Geerts to the tune of 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 32.
Since exhausting his eligibility last May, Geerts has been competing on the professional tennis circuit in Europe. He notched his first professional tournament singles win in the Rising Stars tournament, defeating No. 501 Colin Sinclair in straight sets to take the victory.
Kellovsky followed up with a win over Andrea Bolla in the round of 16 in a tightly-contested match, 7-6 (8), 7-5.
The highlight of his matches came in the quarter final against the No. 6 seed Evan Zhu. With all three sets going into extra points, Kellovsky dropped the first set 6-7 (5). Down but not out, the junior battled back to take the second set 7-6 (7) to force a match-clinching third set, which he also won 7-6 (3).
Heading into the semi-final match, Kellovsky faced Vocel looking to notch his first singles title since 2016. Kellovsky battled, but ultimately fell to end his run at the tournament.
Sun Devil men's tennis finishes out their fall slate this week, traveling to the Columbus Futures tournament held at Ohio State beginning today. Tim Ruehl and Kellovsky are set to take the court representing ASU.
