Several Swimmers Race to Top Times in ASU History at IndianaSeveral Swimmers Race to Top Times in ASU History at Indiana
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Racing to several times good enough for top-10 in school history, Sun Devil Swimming made their presence known on day one of the Indiana Invitational, taking third place on the men's sides and fourth on the women's side through the first 10 events.

The ASU men finished the first day of competition with 304 points while the women scored a total of 211 points.

The meet featured a layout similar to the NCAA National Championships, taking a morning-preliminary, night-finals format. The top 24 swimmers in each preliminary round moved onto a final round split between an A, B and C final.

After putting up just one NCAA Cut through their first four meets of the season, ASU secured 13 B-Cuts today in Bloomington, while Evan Carlson improved on his seed time in the 50 freestyle. Two of those cuts came from freshmen, compared to last season when only one freshman qualified for the national championship.

Six Sun Devil men moved onto A-Finals, including three in the 500 freestyle. Ben Olszewski headlined the distance group, securing a second-place finish with a personal best time of 4:18.61. Olszewski was behind only 2017-18 All-American Marcelo Acosta of Louisville. Olszewski's time was also good for fourth-fastest in ASU history, securing him two of the top-5 times and five of the top-10 times in school history.

Two freshmen competed alongside Olszewski in the A-Final in Cody Bybee and Liam Bresette, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Bybee touched the wall at 4:20.38, a fraction of a second from joining Olszewski on the top-10 list.

Erica Laning and Emma Nordin secured A-Final cuts in the 500 free as well, with Laning finishing fourth overall and Nordin placing sixth. Both of Laning's finishes in the preliminary and final were quick enough for a top time, as Laning's preliminary time was good for sixth in school history and her finals time was tenth-fastest.

Danny Comforti and Grant House represented the Maroon and Gold in the 200 IM A-Finals. Comforti put up a personal best of 1:44.91 in the finals to take fifth while House followed soon after, finishing seventh.

E. Carlson rounded out the A-Final racers for ASU, competing in his signature 50 free event. The sophomore cut his seed time by cutting over one-tenth of a second, lowering it to 19.76 which is currently the fourth-fastest time in all of NCAA Division I swimming. Carter Swift and Zach Poti added B-Cuts in the event as well.

The Sun Devil men finished the meet with an exclamation point, as their A squad in the 400 medley relay raced to a podium finish at third place. Touching the wall at 3:07.86, the foursome of Poti, Comforti, Khalil Fonder and E. Carlson also secured a NCAA provisional time with the finish.

The Indiana Invitational resumes tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. MST. Fans can follow along with live stats linked above or by following @ASUSwimDive on Twitter.
