Diving Finishes Texas Invite with Platform Event

Diving Finishes Texas Invite with Platform EventDiving Finishes Texas Invite with Platform Event
AUSTIN, Texas – Sun Devil Diving finished up the third and final day of the Texas Hall of Fame Diving Invitational, sending three men to compete in the platform event earlier this afternoon.

The event provided an important opportunity  to divers Youssef Selim, Brandon Spencer and Caleb Ives, as traditional regular-season dual meets do not include platform dive. The event allowed the men an extra shot to put up an NCAA Zone qualifying score, whereas the only other chance to participate in the event would have come at the Pac-12 Championships if not for the Texas Invite.

The platform round included some of the premiere divers in the country, including the 2018 National Champion in platform, Zhipeng Zeng of Tennessee, and six All-Americans out of the 17-person field.

Selim, who qualified for the National Championships in platform last season, put up a Zone Qualifying score today of 345.40. The Egyptian chose a moderately difficult routine to achieve the score, with all of his dives having a difficulty of three and above. Saving one of his hardest dives for last, Selim executed his 5253B dive to score 70.40, bringing his score to its final of 345.40, securing seventh place in the event.

Freshmen Brandon Spencer and Caleb Ives rounded out the Sun Devils in the platform. Spencer put up a score of 253.60 for 13th place while Ives contributed 228.10 points for 16th place. The Texas Invite was the first action for Ives since he competed in the springboard at Florida State earlier this year.

With the conclusion of the Texas Hall of Fame Diving Invitational, Sun Devil Diving set their sights on winter training. They are back in action in 2019, when the California Golden Bears roll into Tempe for a Pac-12 matchup.
