TEMPE – With the indoor track and field season just over a month away, director of track and field Greg Kraft and the Sun Devil program has announced ASU's 2019 track and field schedule that features three home meets, some familiar away meets and a handful of new events.
It's no surprise to followers of the Sun Devils that ASU opens its 2019 indoor campaign up the hill in Flagstaff at the NAU Friday Night Duals.
The day-long meet lifts the lid on the season and is one of four trips to Flagstaff the Devils will make during the winter months.
The busiest weekend under a roof will once again feature three of the biggest meets of the entire indoor season Feb. 8-9. ASU's middle distance and distance runners will likely make the trip to a snowy Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State at the Lied Center's oversized track. Field eventers are expected take the jump across the state line to the Don Kirby Elite at altitude in Albuquerque. The sprinters will probably tackle "the fastest indoor track in the country" down in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at the Tyson invitational where last year nine NCAA Championships qualifying times were recorded in the men's and women's 60-meter dashes.
Dempsey Indoor on the campus of the University of Washington will play host to the MPSF Championships for the 17th consecutive season Feb. 22-23, and those with qualifying marks will move on to the NCAA Indoor Championships that return to Birmingham, Alabama, for the first time in three years March 8-9.
There won't be any down time for the Devils after the indoor season as the Baldy Castillo Invitational kicks off the outdoor season just one weekend after the NCAA crowns its indoor team champions.
Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium will also host the ASU Invitational March 22-23 before the Devils split up and head to their first road competitions of the outdoor season, the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto and the 92nd Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.
ASU's home finale and senior day will be the 40th Sun Angel Classic the first weekend of April.
The Sun Devils won't have to travel far for the Pac-12 Championships this year as their neighbors to the south will host the conference championships for the first time since 2011.
Athletes with regional qualifying marks will then progress to the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds held in Sacramento for the second consecutive year.
With the recent razing of Oregon's historic Hayward Field, the University of Texas will host the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 5-8.
The upcoming Sun Devil schedule can be seen in its entirety here.
