TEMPE – Arizona State bounced back after a disappointing morning of doubles matches to win four out of five singles matches in the afternoon at the final day of the 24th Thunderbird Invitational Sunday.
"Overall I was pleased with the way we ended the tournament," associate head coach Matt Langley said. "I think we played well in singles and got better as the day went on, but we came out flat in doubles and made too many unforced errors but I was pleased with the way the girls bounced back and finished strong."
The first session of the day pitted ASU against doubles tandems from Mississippi State and Washington.
Tereza Kolarova and Sammi Hampton dropped a 7-5 match to the Bulldog tandem Antonakis/Rentouli, and Arakawa (UW) and Lizarturry (MSU) proved too much for ASU's Slaysman/Klanecek as they handled the Sun Devil duo 6-1.
Later in the day, though, the Devils bounced back and combined with Pepperdine to defeat Kansas State 3-1.
Samantha Alicea was the honorary Wave today, and she took down K-State junior Ines Mesquita after going down a set 2-6, 6-3,10-3.
ASU then went on to sweep its three afternoon matches with TCU.
Hampton made easy work of Chloe Hule, 6-2, 6-0, and Tereza Kolarova dropped the first set to Kennedy before bouncing back to win two straight and take match in a third-set tiebreak.
In the final session of the day, freshman Grace Koester defeated Washington's Abbey Watanbe, 6-3, 6-2.
"I think this year's hidden dual format gave the girls a little more of what they'll experience in the spring with their teammates next to them and the amount of tennis you can get in with a format like this," Langley said. "Hopefully we can take what we've done this weekend and build on it as we go into the spring season."
The final day of the Thunderbird marks the conclusion of the Sun Devils' fall season.
