SALT LAKE CITY – In the last road match of the year, Arizona State women's volleyball lost to Utah in straight sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-6) in the Jon. M Huntsman Center on Sunday afternoon.
Arizona State (13-15, 4-12 Pac-12) hung in there with Utah (15-12, 7-9 Pac-12) in the first two sets, but the Utes overpowered the Sun Devils in the third set. Utah won both matches in the season series against ASU, taking both in sweeps. The Sun Devils finish the 2018 season with a 3-7 record on the road.
Megan Beedie had seven kills on a .700 clip, her best hitting percentage since hitting .733 on Sept. 2, against Xavier. Alyse Ford led the team in kills with 11, adding six digs and two blocks. Courtney Leffel anchored the defense with 14 digs, tying for the most in the match.
Utah had the lead for the entire first set, getting up by as much as eight points at 19-11. Despite the large lead, Arizona State made it interesting down the stretch. The Sun Devils went on a 7-1 run, including two kills from Ford, to get within two at 22-20. Ultimately, the Utes were able to close out the set, taking it 25-21.
In the second set, it seemed as if Utah was going to take control again after scoring three in a row to go up 7-4. But a 6-1 run from ASU that saw two kills from Beedie put them on top, 10-9. From there, the two teams kept it close. After falling behind, Beedie and Ford teamed up for a block to tie it at 20-20. Utah got back up, however, and took the set, 25-22.
The third set was all Utah. Arizona State was unable to find any rhythm, falling 25-6 And losing the match in three. This is the 11th loss in a row for the Sun Devils.
Arizona State will finish off the regular season with two-straight weekends at home. ASU will host UCLA and USC next weekend.
