TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devils jumped out to a 10-point early lead and used a 16-3 second half push to improve to 2-0 on the season. Unlike Tuesday's double-overtime thriller victory against Cal State Fullerton, Sun Devil fans breathed easier Friday as the the Sun Devils cruised past McNeese State, 80-52, at Wells Fargo Arena.

Following his record-breaking 28-point freshman debut, Luguentz Dort led the team in scoring once again, putting up 25 points. Zylan Cheatham posted his first double-double at Arizona State, tallying 16 points with game-highs 12 rebounds and six assists. Kimani Lawrence also scored 16 points, including a pair of back-to-back threes in the second half.

Arizona State had a much better defensive performance in this game, holding McNeese to only 52 points and 32 percent from the field. The 52 points that McNeese scored tonight was the lowest Arizona State has allowed in Bobby Hurley's tenure.
Arizona State started off the game cold, making only one of their first six shots until an 8-0 run by the Sun Devils, highlighted by a steal from Remy Martin leading to a dunk by Taeshon Cherry. The Sun Devils limited McNeese State to 23 first half points, the lowest ASU has allowed in a half since Dec. 5, 2015.
The second half had a lot of highlights for the Sun Devils. Most notably Cheatham's emphatic windmill dunk after stealing the ball to get the crowd on their feet. Cheatham stole the ball again on the next possession, leading to a Dort layup to cap off an 8-0 run and force McNeese to call a timeout. Dort had a couple of dunks for himself in the second half, driving easy to the lane on both. Dort pressed after the dunk, stealing the ball the next possession and slamming it down just seconds after the first one.
The Sun Devils are back in action when they host Long Beach State on Monday, Nov. 12. The game tips off at 7 p.m. MST and can be viewed on Pac-12 Networks

"I think their pressure and athleticism just overwhelmed us. We just ran out of gas. When Kevin (Hunt) got in foul trouble with four and they put the press on we weren't as connected defensively. We just ran out of gas. They are a really good team and they just overwhelmed us for that six or seven minutes by being bigger, stronger, and faster."
On positive out of an experience like playing ASU...
"I think there are a lot of good things. First road trip for us versus two really good teams and traveled I don't know how many miles. I thought we had some guys really grow up tonight. I thought Kevin Hunt and Shamarkus (Kennedy) really grew up. I thought they played great. To be within ten at a place like this and than cut it to single digits in the second half, that was really a positive. We just have to figure out how to sustain the level of execution and concentration that we need to be successful."
On Luguentz Dort…
He's going to make a lot of money playing the game. He's really good. He is talented and Bobby (Hurley) does a really good job of putting him in situations where he can go downhill and when he does that, he's a monster. He's going to continue to get better and obviously play at the next level sooner rather than later."
