LOS ANGELES, Calif – Evan Carlson raced to a 19.89 finish in the 50 freestyle and notched victories in the 50 and 100 free as ASU dropped their meet against No. 7/11 USC on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles, Calif. The men dropped their meet by a final of 173-126 while the women fell, 168-121.
"The best part of Evan swimming is how he's developed," coach Bob Bowman said. "He did a good job his freshman year but did a tremendous job this summer. He's really young and has a lot of growing to do, and it's exciting to see him race at this level."
E. Carlson's two victories total four in those events on the season, taking the top spot in the 50 and 100 free in every meet so far this year. The sophomore's time in the 50 free today broke a personal best he set against Florida State that also secured him a NCAA B-Cut spot.
In the diving well, Brandon Spencer made his collegiate debut this afternoon, placing third on both the 1M and 3M dive. The freshman put up a score of 325.95 in the 3M springboard event, qualifying him for the NCAA Zone Championships. Sophomore Ashley McCool also had a solid outing against the Trojans, taking first in both the 1M (300.38) and 3M (332.85) events.
Backstroker Khalil Fonder headlined a group of freshmen that totaled 35 points on the men's side, putting up 12 points on his own. Fonder sprinted to a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly – an event in which the Sun Devils entered only freshman – behind a time of 48.33 and followed up with a third-place finish in the 100 back.
Eight other freshman contributed points: Jack Little (1650FR, 500FR), Noah Henry (200FR, 200BK), Jack Edgemond (200FL), Cody Bybee (200FL), Ethan Luc (50FR, 100FR), Brandon Spencer (1M, 3M) and Jakob Icimsoy (200BK).
"We're a very young team and whenever freshmen can swim against a team like USC and score points, it a good thing," Bowman said. "The most important thing to me is whether they're improving day-to-day, week to week, and we're seeing that. They're definitely meeting our expectations."
The women excelled in distance events as usual, with Emma Nordin and Erica Laning combining to take the top two times in the 500 free and Caitlyn Wilson placing second in the 1000 free.
"I think first and foremost it goes to the culture that Coach Bowman has instilled over the four years he's been here," distance coach Dan Kesler said. "There's 100% buy in by the team and where ASU women's swimming is headed. We are focusing on the process and just trying to get a little better one day at a time."
Chloe Isleta continued her dominance in the backstroke events, finishing second in both the 100 and 200 back in the meet. Isleta has not placed lower than second in either event through her first three meets of the season.
The ASU women are back in action tomorrow morning, traveling to Westwood to take on UCLA. The meet between the Sun Devils and Bruins is set to start at 10:30 a.m. MST, and fans can keep up with the action by following @ASUSwimDive on Twitter.
