TEMPE, Ariz. – In the first Pac-12 home match of the season, Arizona State women's volleyball fell in three sets (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) to No. 22 Washington State at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday night.
"I'm disappointed with the match tonight," Arizona State head coach Sanja Tomasevic said. "We need to stick to our scouting report, stick to what we are doing and execute what we know we can do. We were dialed in this week at practice. We need to just play the same game wherever we are at, home or on the road."
Arizona State (12-5, 3-2 Pac-12) struggled from the service line, serving just one ace while missing 10 serves. Washington State (12-3, 3-2 Pac-12) out-hit the home team .278 to .155. The Cougars have now won four in a row against the Sun Devils.
Megan Beedie led the team in kills with nine on a .438 clip. Anchoring the back row, Courtney Leffel collected a game-high 15 digs. Nicole Peterson and Callie Jones split the setting duties, notching 15 and 14 assists, respectively.
Both teams traded points to start the match, keeping it close. Beedie kept the Sun Devils within one of the Cougar's lead with a solo block at 7-6, but a 3-1 run for Washington State forced a timeout for the home team, down 11-8. Beedie stayed hot, notching a pair of kills, but a 3-1 run from the Cougars made it 19-14 in favor of the visitors. Washington State ended the set on a 4-0 run to take it, 25-17.
The Sun Devils opened the second set with a 7-0 run made up of five errors from the Cougars. After WSU got back in it with a few runs, a kill from Alyse Ford pushed the lead back to 9-7. ASU strung together four in a row to push the lead to 13-8 following another Washington State error. The momentum swung in favor of the Cougars when they went on a 9-1 run to take a three-point lead, 20-17. The visiting squad closed out the second set, 25-21.
The third set started close. Halle Johnson dug up a great ball to set up Ford for the kill, putting the Sun Devils up 5-4. However, WSU caught fire and started to pull away. Ford powered a 3-0 run for ASU, but Washington State responded with five straight to go up 22-14. The Cougars took the third set 25-17 and the match.
Arizona State will host No. 15 Washington on Sunday at noon MST. Links for live streaming and scoring can be found on the women's volleyball schedule page.
