PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – No. 8 John-Baptiste/Hattingh battled and advanced into the quarterfinal round at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, California, Thursday afternoon.
The Sweet 16 matchup pitted the Sun Devil duo against some conference foes from UCLA in No. 29 Bolton/Hart.
The match didn't start out in the Devils' favor as they found themselves down 2-5 in a one-set pro-style match.
"I thought Lauryn and Ilze did a great job of battling back from a break down at 2-5, and having another break point at 2-6," associate head coach Matt Langley said. "That's never an easy task in a short pro-set like this one was. I think we were able to lift our level, play more aggressively and put more returns in play, which allowed us to get a break back and get back into the match."
The All-American tandem turned it on, down 2-6, came back to force a tiebreak and eventually won the match 8-7(4) to claim a place as one of the final eight teams at the Championships.
Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh return to the hardcourt Friday to play for a spot in the semifinal against a duo from Kansas.
"I hope we can come out tomorrow at the same level we finished at today," Langley said.
