TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 14/NR Arizona State men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned a split in their dual meet against No. 21/21 Florida State on Friday afternoon at the Morcom Aquatic Center.
The No. 14 Sun Devil men (1-0) recorded their first win on the season in their trek to the Sunshine State, 184-116. The win for the men brings their all-time series record over Florida State to 2-0, dating back to last season when the ASU men took down the Seminoles last season in Tempe, 176-24. The Sun Devil women dropped their meet with the Seminoles, 161-139.
Combined, the Sun Devils won 15 individual events on the day, including a sweep in four of those events.
Three Sun Devils led the way for the ASU men, with Zach Poti, Evan Carlson and Ben Olszewski touching the wall first in two individual events each. Poti won the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke, Olszewski contributed wins in the 1000 free and 500 free while Carlson took home first in the 50 free and 100 free.
Carlson's time of 19.94 in the 50 free was also a personal best for the sophomore and quick enough to secure a NCAA B-Cut in his first dual of the season.
The freshmen also had a nice showing for ASU, with Liam Bresette, Cody Bybee, Jack Edgemond, Khalil Fonder, Noah Henry, Jack Little and Ethan Luc all contributing podium finishes for the Sun Devils.
For the ASU women, Chloe Isleta dominated the backstroke events, sweeping the 100 and 200 backstroke while placing second in the 200 IM. The junior won the 100 with a time of 54.52 and the 200 in 1:58.50.
Five other Sun Devil swimmers recorded individual wins on the day. Caitlyn Wilson won the 1000 free with a time of 10:05.42 while Erica Laning touched first in the 200 free at 1:49.91. Nora Deleske presented a win in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:01.18.
Rounding out the top finishers for the women were Emma Nordin in the in the 500 free at 4:55.08 and Marlies Ross in the 200 IM at 2:02.69.
On the men's side, Grant House won the 200 free at 1:38.58, while Danny Comforti took first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.34.
In the diving well, the Sun Devils showcased their talent with three divers notching NCAA Zones qualifying scores. Youssef Selim took top honors in both the one-meter (352.50) and three-meter (379.13) dives – both zone qualifying scores – while David Hoffer took second in the three-meter to punch his ticket with a score of 304.43.
On the women's side, Ashley McCool's performance in the one-meter springboard granted her a zone qualifying standard with a score of 300.30.
For the Sun Devil men in the 200 medley relay, the foursome of Zach Poti, Elijah Warren, Cody Bybee and Evan Carlson touched first with a time of 1:27.93.
The No. 14/NR Arizona State swimming and diving teams are back in action next weekend in Los Angeles. The men and women are set to take on No. 8/11 USC on Friday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. MST, while just the women head 30 minutes west to UCLA on Saturday for a dual with UCLA set to begin at 10:30 a.m. MST.
