SAN DIEGO – The Sun Devil women's tennis team saw one doubles tandem advance to the quarterfinal round, and two women make it to the round of 32 at the ITA Regional Championships in San Diego this weekend.
Junior Savannah Slaysman had the best overall outing of the weekend as she and freshman Samantha Alicea broke into the doubles quarterfinal, and she was one of the last 32 women standing in the singles bracket.
Slaysman/Alicea took down Lev-Ari/Sentenac of UC Santa Barbara in the round of 32, 8-6, then outlasted conference rivals Ewing/Wilson of Southern California with the same score before being eliminated from the tournament by Lahey/Levashova (Pepperdine), 8-3.
Individually, Alicea lost in the round of 128 to Tumosa of Loyola Marymount. After a first-round bye, Slaysman handled Long Beach State's Meyer, 7-6, 6-4 to set up a round-of-32-match with Santa Barbara's Tiffany Lagarde that she dropped 6-3. 7-6.
Tereza Kolarova was the other Sun Devil who soared into the round of 32, winning two straight on the first day of the tournament.
In the first round, Kolarova swept San Diego State's Nadozie, 6-3, 6-3, then made it back-to-back sweeps in the second round when she defeated Lev-Ari.
UCLA's Atlick eliminated Kolarova in the round of 32, 6-4, 6-2, but she went on to win one more on the weekend when she handled Goncharova (UCSU).
The next outing on the schedule for the Sun Devils is the ITA Fall Championships, which is on the same weekend at ASU's only home event of the season the annual Thunderbird Classic.
