HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Just a few miles from the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Sun Devil Hockey began firing on all cylinders again for a 2-1 victory over Alabama-Huntsville at Von Braun Center.
The victory put ASU (3-2-0) back in the green with their first road win of the season thanks to goals from junior linemates Tyler Busch and Brett Gruber.
"It was a good road win," said head coach Greg Powers. "Huntsville worked hard, pesky and not easy to play against in their home opener, but our guys found a way. Our top line really came up big for us and got a couple really nice goals."
The Sun Devils started off the scoring in the first period with a beautiful set up off the face-off, as Johnny Walker found Busch after the junior forward won the draw. Busch's second goal of the season came just six seconds after the power-play ended.
Thirty seconds into the second period, Alabama-Huntsville (0-5-0) caught a break as Hans Gorowsky capitalized on one of the few Sun Devil mistakes with a breakaway tally.
A back-and-forth affair lasted for a majority of the middle frame before the Sun Devils broke the tie. Busch won the face-off and backhanded a pass to Walker, who was behind the 'D' with Gruber. Walker dished it to Gruber, who wristed it over the glove of UAH's Mark Sinclair for the eventual game-winning goal.
Walker finished with two assists on the night to bring his season point total to seven in five games, which is tied for fifth in the country -- just one point out of first.
Junior goaltender Joey Daccord made 26 of 27 saves on the night for his third win of the season.
ASU's penalty kill continued to play shut down hockey, killing all four chances and pushing their kill streak to 13-straight.
Puck drop in game two is set for 7:07 p.m. (CST) / 5:07 p.m. (AZ) on Flohockey.tv.
