TEMPE, Ariz. -- After starting the season off with back-to-back weekends at home, the Sun Devils (2-2-0) head to Alabama-Huntsville (0-4-0) for their first road series of the season on Oct. 19-20 at Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center.
It will be the first road trip to Huntsville as the two Sun Belt teams meet for the second-time in two years. ASU split the series, winning the first and dropping the second by a goal in Tempe.
"This weekend is a crucial series to get back on track, and if we play the way we did against Ohio State, I'm confident in our guys," said head coach Greg Powers. "It's their home opening weekend and they're hungry for a win, so we'll have to be at our best."
Thirteen different Sun Devils have contributed to the offensive success including six goal scorers, while five freshmen have tallied their first points in the maroon and gold.
Dominating the offensive push is Sun Devil sophomore Johnny Walker. Despite the shutout against Ohio State Sunday that ended Walker's eight-game goal streak dating back to last season, the sophomore forward is off to a hot start with four goals in four games. He is tied with Colorado College forward Alex Berardinelli as the number one goal scorer in the nation.
It took Walker 14 games to reach four goals a season ago, in which he finished with the second-most goals among NCAA freshmen with 17.
Netminder Joey Daccord enters the weekend with a .952 save percentage, including two shutouts and one assist under his belt. Daccord played both games against the Chargers a season ago, allowing two goals in each for a series split.
Last season, the Chargers were eliminated in the first round of the WCHA playoffs, pushing Northern Michigan to a third game in the quarterfinals.
The lone goal scorer for the Charges this season is Austin Beaulieu with assists from Cam Knight and Kurt Gosselin. Gosselin tallied 16 points with 11 assists and five goals last season.
Sophomore Christian Rajic accounted for nine goals and six assists for the Chargers a season ago.
Before finding their way back to Huntsville, the Chargers faced Miami, Colorado College and No. 10 Denver, allowing 16 goals in those four games.
Game one of the weekend is Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:07 p.m. CST in Huntsville. The games will be live-streamed on FloHockey.
