TEMPE, Ariz. – In their only home action in 2018, Sun Devil swimming completed their annual intrasquad on Friday evening at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. On the men's side, the Gold squad took the victory 146-115, while the women's Maroon squad won 121-112.
"Our goal, really, is to just keep getting better," coach Bob Bowman said. "If you look at what we did today, our times were OK. Some events were really good while some events weren't very good, but we just need to come in next week and use the feedback to just get better."
A couple Sun Devils achieved NCAA B-Cuts in the scrimmage, including Zach Poti's winning 100BK and Silja Kansakoski's winning 100BR. Poti was an honorable mention All-American in that event last year, while Kansakoski won silver in the 100BR at the Pac-12 Championships and was also an All-American last season in that event.
A few notable newcomers made their presence in the pool known in the intrasquad including Indiana transfer Jack Kucharczyk, who won first in the 100BR and the 200BR, while freshman Ruby Martin contributed wins in the 100FL and 200FL and lead off in the winning 400FR relay foursome.
Transfer Cierra Runge also saw collegiate action for the first time in over a year, placing first among the Sun Devils in the 500FR, anchoring the winning foursome in the 400FR relay and taking first in the 1000FR.
"On the women's side, we have some people who are going to step in big time and help us," Bowman said. "Ruby is a big-time player, and obviously we have Cierra swimming for us in January. That'll be a really big pick up."
The intrasquad also gave Sun Devil returnees a chance to tune up before beginning the season next week. Evan Carlson proved to be one of the best sprinters on the team this evening, placing first in the 50 FR and 100FR, contributing to the winning 400FR relay squad and anchoring the winning 200 medley relay.
"Evan Carlson was very, very good today," Bowman said. "Our best swimmer by far in terms of consistently, and he had a great summer because he trained hard."
The women's squad opens their season next week Friday in Corvallis as they take on Oregon State. The meet kicks off five-straight away matches before the women return home to Tempe against Washington State in mid-January and the men return home against Cal late January.
