SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – In their first trip out of the continental United States under head coach Sanja Tomasevic, Sun Devil volleyball makes the trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico to take part in the third annual Puerto Rico Clasico.
The trip comes just a few days after the squad played host to the Sun Devil Classic where they captured their second-straight tournament title. ASU finished the weekend with a perfect 3-0 sweep of UT Arlington, New Mexico State and Pacific.
ASU kicked off the weekend with a 3-1 win over UT Arlington, led by Ivana Jeremic and her career weekend for the Sun Devils. Jeremic notched a career high 18 digs in the match. Facing off against NM State later that evening, the Sun Devils made quick work of the Aggies, gliding past in straight sets, 3-0.
Finishing up the Classic against Pacific on Saturday, the Sun Devils played from behind for the first time on the weekend, falling behind 1-0 early on against the Tigers. Jeremic and sophomore Megan Beedie stepped up for ASU, with Jeremic setting a career-high in kills with 24 and Beedie with a career-high 10 kills.
For their efforts on the weekend, Beedie was named Tournament MVP, while Jeremic and Courtney Leffel were named to the All-Tournament team.
In Puerto Rico, ASU is set to face off against Towson on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers come to Puerto Rico with a 1-2 overall record, with a win over Sienna College and losses against Radford University and Loyola Marymount (MD). The squad finished with a 27-6 record in 2017, making it to the second round of the NIVC Tournament eventually falling in straight sets to Syracuse. Towson boasts five seniors and five juniors on their roster, opening the Clasico against Miami on Thursday.
On Sunday, ASU takes on Xavier and Missouri in the final day of the Clasico. Both games mark the first meetings of the Sun Devils and Xavier/Missouri in program history. Opening the 2018 season at the NIU Invitational, Xavier is off to a 1-1 start so far. The Musketeers dropped their first match against Oklahoma, and came back the next day to defeat NIU.
Missouri rolls into San Juan with a 2-1 record, kicking off their season at the James Madison Invitational where they defeated both Delaware State and Fairfield in straight sets before dropping their match with host JMU, 3-1.
