TEMPE, Ariz. -- Fresh off a trip to the 2018 Women's College World Series, Arizona State softball will take a look back, and honor one of the most successful softball teams in NCAA history this fall.
ASU has put plans in place to recognize the 2008 National Championship team during the Sun Devil's alumni weekend scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 29. The group, who still holds numerous NCAA and ASU records, won the first NCAA National Championship in program history after posting an incredible 66-5 record on the season.
The historic team rallied off 12 straight victories to end the year, and claim the best overall season record in program history. The group also retains the record for the largest margin of victory (11) in a championship-clinching game in their win over Texas A&M, a win that brought ASU its first NCAA softball title.
The 2008 team is well represented in the record books with team single-season records in runs scored (480), doubles (107), hits (611) and home runs (99). One of the best offensive years in Arizona State history was paired with the most complete games (71) and shutouts (28) making for a dominant recipe for success.
The 2008 Sun Devils dropped just three conference games through the season, and stampeded through the schedule with 28 straight victories. Two perfect games were recorded that season with five All-Americans on the roster, including Sun Devil Alum Katie Burkhart.
Burkhart, who was a senior during the 2008 championship run, will be inducted into the Sun Devil sports hall of fame that same weekend. She sits at the top of ASU's all-time wins list as a pitcher and has the most single-season strikeouts of any Sun Devil with 517 in 2007.
She holds the top three spots on the all-time list after three straight seasons of dominance on the mound from 2006-2008. In her freshman season, she recorded 220 K's, good for 13th on the Sun Devil all-time list.
Fans looking for an opportunity to see this 2008 team in action one more time are invited to our Alumni Game on September 29. The game is open to the public and will be planned around ASU's home football game that day, so fans can enjoy both Sun Devil events.
ASU softball will be honoring the 2008 team at their Alumni Game, as well. Please come join us in celebrating their accomplishments. First pitch in Saturday's Alumni Game will be at noon, with the entire game free and open to the public.
Fans are also invited to help celebrate both the 2008 ASU softball team and the 2018 WCWS team, by joining the Sun Devils at their annual Golden Fork Awards Banquet on Sept. 30. Registration for the Banquet can be found here.
