TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona State Volleyball team (3-0) defeated the Pacific Tigers (1-2), 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-21 Saturday night in Wells Fargo Arena to complete a sweep of the Sun Devil Volleyball Classic and remain undefeated on the new season.
"We passed really well this weekend, I was proud," coach Sanja Tomasevic said. "Our serving also got us into a place that got the other team in trouble. These two things were definitely what helped us to sweep this weekend."
The Sun Devils' success was a team effort including junior Ivana Jeremic with 24 kills on the match, a career-high for the Serbian. Sophomore Megan Beedie provided an additional 12 kills for Arizona State, topping her previous career high of 10, set yesterday against UT Arlington. Junior setter Nicole Peterson recorded 48 assists and 17 digs, good for her third double-double in as many matches.
"Megan has been practicing very well and she came into this season very prepared and in the best shape of her life," Tomasevic said. "She's jumping really high and hitting really hard and maturing very well from last season. I feel like this is not even 40% of Megan Beedie, so it's going to be really exciting to see her full potential."
For the Tigers, sophomore Kaitlyn Lines led the way with 18 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore setter Han De Schrijver provided 49 assists and 15 digs.
ASU's perfect record on the weekend secured them first place in the classic for the second straight year. For their efforts, Beedie was Tournament MVP with Jeremic and Courtney Leffel named to the All-Tournament team. Tatyana Battle (NM State), Megan Hart (NM State) and Gheather Zhanelle (UTA) rounded out the team.
Success this weekend also provided much needed momentum for the Sun Devils and showed what the squad needed to work on heading to Puerto Rico later next week.
"We want to be steady with our own tempo and not let the opponent dictate our own game," Tomasevic said. "I believe we're still letting opponents dictate our tempo, so I think as we mature and become closer as a team, we'll be able to control the tempo regardless of what happens on the other side of the net."
Next up, the Sun Devils continue non-conference play in San Juan, Puerto Rico where they will take on Towson, Xavier and Missouri in the two-day Puerto Rico Clasico, Sept. 1-2.
