TEMPE, Ariz. - Sun Devil Swimming head coach Bob Bowman announced the addition of former Sun Devil swimmer Herbie Behm to his coaching staff. Behm, who will serve as an assistant under Bowman, rounds out the ASU staff set to kick off the season in September.
"I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to coach at my alma mater," Behm said. "As an alumnus, I have been blown away by the improvements the team has seen since Coach Bowman's arrival."
Behm returns to Tempe after serving as the assistant sprints coach at the University of Utah for two seasons. During his tenure in Salt Lake, Behm led a group of more than 20 student-athletes in their daily training programs while assisting and working with each individual's technique, training strategies and post race analysis. Under Behm's tutelage, 20 student-athletes set school records in just two seasons.
At Utah, Behm also coached a 2018 Pac-12 Champion and an All-American in the 200 medley relay. One of his student-athletes also swam the fastest 50-yard backstroke in the nation in the 2017-18 season.
Prior to arriving in Salt Lake, Behm served on the staff right here in Arizona at the Phoenix Swim Club. There, Behm developed a strong background of stroke technique and the ability to develop and enhance the skills of all ages and competitive backgrounds. Aside from competitive skill, Behm also brings a wealth of knowledge in developing long-term student-athlete development in various skill levels.
"I am truly humbled to be a part of such an accomplished staff and am excited to have the opportunity to help build something special," Behm said. "I've missed Tempe a lot since graduation and can't wait to come home."
Bringing experience from the national circuit as well, Behm served as a coach on both the USA and Puerto Rican National Team. Behm mentored several athletes who won gold and silver medals at the Pan-American Games and swimmers who earned a total of 62 national final swims and broke a total of eight national records.
"We are excited to welcome Herbie Behm and his wife back home to Tempe," Bowman said. "His data-driven, technique-focused approach will help not only our speed group but the entire team. His extensive club experience in Arizona will be a tremendous asset for us moving forward."
Behm swam at Arizona State from 2010-13. Excelling in the classroom as well, Behm was a three-time scholar athlete award winner and graduated with his degree in Psychology while minoring in Communications. As a Sun Devil, Behm was a part of the foursome that set the school record in the 400 medley relay.
