Since 1993, the Tempe Sports Authority Foundation has awarded The Courage Award at its annual banquet to recognize individual's courageous spirit. Each year the foundation raises money through the awards to provide scholarship opportunities that recognize the character and courage of individuals who overcome challenges. The award also raises money for grants for local nonprofit organizations who offer programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body in our youth.
Bobby Hurley is changing the culture in Tempe. And if ASU has its way, he's just getting started. My story: https://t.co/NZ38fiwaVe

Hurley, now known for leading the Sun Devils to their most successful start in program history, is being recognized for the courage and strength he has shown the past 25 years recovering from an accident that nearly ended his basketball career and his life.
In the year following the accident, Hurley would return the NBA and would go on to play four more seasons before stepping away from the court. He would eventually return to the league in 2003 working as a team scout and in 2010 Hurley began his first coaching job. In 2015 he was hired as the head coach at Arizona State.

Now three years removed from Hurley's hire, Sun Devil basketball has matched its highest ranking in school history (third in the Associated Press Poll in December of 2017), its best average attendance in history (10,603), reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014 (and just fourth time in 23 seasons), notched its best non-conference win in school history (at No. 2 Kansas on Dec. 10) and defeated two eventual 2018 No. 1 seeds in a span of a few weeks (Kansas and Xavier).
Hurley can add The Courage Award to his growing list of awards and accolades as a player and coach, including being the 1992 NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player as well as a finalist for the Joe B. Hall Award, which is given to the nation's top first-year head coach.
