Évian-les-Bains, France – Arizona State women's golf's Olivia Mehaffey was awarded the Michael Carter "Junior" Memorial Award at the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup over the weekend.

The award is given to the Palmer Cup participants – one male, one female (females included in Palmer Cup for first time in 2018) – who best represent the qualities and ideals of sportsmanship, integrity, and upholding of the game. The award is named in remembrance of Michael Carter, a member of the Penn State men's golf team who died in a car accident in 2002.

"Olivia is a great honoree for this award," said Sun Devil head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "It is in her DNA to be all the things that this award represents. Olivia played well and competed hard in the Palmer Cup in the first year that women were invited to play. What a great honor all around!"

Mehaffey was the female recipient of the award while Collin Morikawa of La Cañada Flintridge, Calif., who recently finished his junior year at Cal, was the male recipient.

A Northern Ireland native, Mehaffey was part of a history-making year of the Palmer Cup, part of the first group of women to play in the prestigious tournament. Competing with the international team, she won the first point of the day on the final day of competition Sunday.

The Palmer Cup, a collegiate version of the Ryder Cup, has been contested every year across Europe and America since the match play tournament started in 1997.
