TEMPE – Arizona State standout Magdalyn Ewen has been named as one of three finalists for the highest honor in track and field, the 2018 Bowerman Award, the organization announced Wednesday.
Ewen joins three-time finalist Keturah Orji of Georgia, and Kentucky freshman Sydney McLaughlin as the three women up for the highly-touted honor, and fan voting for the top-prize in track and field opened Thursday.
The Sun Devil grad is the only thrower on the list and now the only thrower in the history of the award with back-to-back finalist designations.
Among the three finalists, the trio set five collegiate records, won seven NCAA titles and 10 individual conference crowns. As for Ewen, her senior season alone accounted for three NCAA titles, two collegiate records and was a perfect five-for-five on conference victories in her events.
Although Ewen did not advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in arguably her best event, the hammer throw, she still managed to break her own collegiate record in the event and win it at the Pac-12 Championships to contribute to her record-tying seven career Pac-12 titles.
At the conference meet in Palo Alto, she also completed the sweep of the discus, shot put and hammer throw for the second-consecutive season and the second time ever in conference history. The feat included two meet records in the shot and hammer, and earned Ewen the Women's Athlete of the Meet honor.
In the shot put, Ewen put up six of the 10 best throws in collegiate history all in 2018, including the collegiate record in the event. She went into the NCAA Championships as the clear favorite in the event and recorded the second-best throw in championship history to win her first outdoor shot put title. It was her second NCAA shot put crown of the year, though, as she had won the indoor crown earlier in the year where she also finished fourth in the weight throw scored 15 points, good enough got 13th place as a team.
Even though she entered the NCAA discus final as the third-best thrower in terms of distance, Ewen rose to the occasion and won the competition on her final throw as a Sun Devil. She became the first woman in history to win an NCAA shot put, discus and hammer throw title, and moved to third in ASU history in outdoor championships scoring with 46 total points.
The Bowerman Advisory Board is an 11-person panel of track and field experts from around the nation who selected the finalists based on performances recorded during the 2018 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. Only performances from December 1, 2017 through the conclusion of the 2018 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, were eligible for consideration.
Fan voting for The Bowerman begins Thursday, June 21, following the announcement of the men's finalists and runs through Thursday, June 28. Paper voting for past winners, The Bowerman Advisory Board and select media personnel, statisticians and collegiate administrators will conclude July 20.
