SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Two Sun Devils earned trips to the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and another advanced to a regional final Thursday at the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Sacramento, California.
Magdalyn Ewen punched her return ticket to Hayward Field in the shot put when she finished as the top-qualifier by six feet with a throw of 19.13m/62-9.25 feet. Ewen took pole position in the event with her first throw of the day, launching the shot more than 19 meters and setting a West Prelims record in the process.
Also in the shot put, redshirt freshman Samantha Noennig secured a place at the NCAA Championships when she took 11th in the event. The championship appearance will be Noennig's first as a Sun Devil, but the freshman from Wisconsin has been competing with the NCAA's best all year.
She nearly missed out on a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a throw that was just six inches off the final qualifying place, and she finished as the runner-up at the Pac-12 Championships two weeks ago in Palo Alto, California.
Senior Nathan Hiett closed out his Sun Devil career with a 14th-place finish in the pole vault. Hiett cleared 5.15m/16-10.75 feet and just missed out on the final qualifying place as the ninth through 14th place finishers all cleared the same height.
Michael Chadwick came into his first regional prelim as the 48th and final qualifier, but managed to end his season with a 25th place finish at Hornet Stadium, just behind fellow freshman standout Cole Riddle who took 17th.
Alethia Marrero advanced to the regional final in the 800-meter run after she finished second in her heat in an easy 2:08.34.
She'll run again tomorrow for a chance to head to her third NCAA Championships as an individual.
Khalil Parris' short, but memorable Sun Devil career came to a close Thursday as he finished 40th in the 400-meter hurdles. Parris put his name into the Sun Devil record books with his 51.03 from earlier in the season in the 400 hurdles, and scored in the event when he took sixth at the Pac-12 Championships.
Jessica Barreira took 21st in the long jump, Alexis Nichols finished 47th in the 1,500-meter run, Bianca Tinoco took 45th in the 800 and Samantha Ortega closed out the night for ASU with a 44th-place finish in the 10,000.
The meet continues tomorrow for the Sun Devils at 4:30 p.m. PT as, once again, Ewen and Noennig throw for a spot in Eugene, this time in the discus. Shaunie Morrison makes her regional weekend-debut at 5 in the 100-meter hurdles prelims and Marrero runs in the aforementioned 800-meter final at 6:45.
