WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Just two weeks after Arizona State's team season came to a close at the NCAA Championships, the Sun Devils were represented again at the NCAA Doubles Championships by the young duo of Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh who made their tournament debut with a win in the round of 32.
"I thought the girls played well and executed like they have all season long," associate head coach Matt Langley said.
The No. 12 tandem matched up with Ana Oparenovic and Tatum Rice from Arkansas and handled the Razorback duo 6-4, 6-2 to move into the Sweet 16.
The Devils got up 5-2 quickly in the first set, but Oparenovic/Rice fought back to make it 5-4 before ASU made it to six to end the comeback charge.
"Lauryn served great and Ilze returned really well, which held us in good stead throughout both sets," Langley said.
The second set was more of the same as John-Baptiste/Hattingh cruised to the set and match win.
"The early break in the second set was big for us and we were able to use that momentum to roll a bit," Langley said.
It was their 17th win of the season, and fifth over a ranked tandem.
Their Sweet 16 opponent has yet to be determined, but the match can be watched on a live stream provided by the host school Wake Forest.
