PHOENIX – Sun Devil Baseball rallied late in the rubber match against Washington, bringing the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to complete the comeback in a 7-6 loss to the Huskies.
Spencer Torkelson had another three-hit game, finishing 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. The freshman has now reached base in 30 consecutive games this season, one shy of Gage Canning's current non-active total of 31 games.
Canning had a three-run home run to get ASU back in the game, his eighth of the season. The Sun Devils got production from the bottom of the lineup as well with Gage Workman and Alika Williams each going 2-for-4. The 7-8-9 hitters and pinch runners combined to go 6-for-11 with three runs scored.
Boyd Vander Kooi made his return to the mound in the contest, not showing any signs of rust in 2.0 innings as he struck out three with just one hit and no runs allowed. Dellan Raish was also efficient, striking out five in 2.0 innings of work.
The Sun Devils finally got the bats going in the bottom of the seventh inning with all the damage coming with two outs. Williams singled and Luke Leisenring battled back from a 1-2 count to draw a walk to bring Torkelson to the plate.
The freshman wasted no time notching his team-leading 45th RBI on a first pitch single to bring Williams home to get ASU on the board at 5-1.
That set Canning up for his three-run shot, a no doubter to right to give him 41 RBIs on the season and bring ASU back within 5-4.
Washington was able to notch a two-run opposite field home run in the top of the ninth to soil an otherwise exceptional outing from Dellan Raish, who had five strikeouts in 2.0 innings of action.
ASU wasn't going quietly into the afternoon, leading off the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back singles from Drew Swift and Torkelson to get things rolling. Trevor Hauver singled to right field to bring one across and bring ASU back within two with runners on the corners and just one out.
A Lyle Lin sacrifice fly cut it to one run with just one out remaining in the game but were unable to bring the tying run across.
ASU will return to action on Wednesday in a midweek road game at San Diego with first pitch scheduled at 6 p.m. PT.
