TEMPE, Ariz. – Facing off in the second game against conference foe No. 3 Oregon, Sun Devil softball fell to the Ducks, 9-1, on Saturday evening at Farrington Stadium. The crowd of Sun Devil fans at tonight's matchup was the largest attendance this season at 2,029.
Starting pitcher Breanna Macha took the circle for her 12th start of the season tonight. The senior retired the side in order in the first, but the Ducks stirred trouble from there on out.
Totaling six home runs in the game, No. 3 Oregon got on the board in that fashion in the second frame. Leadoff batter Gwen Svekis sent a solo shot to right field to stake the Ducks a 1-0 lead, and Lauren Lindvall sent two more across the plate with a two-run home run of her own.
Macha limited the damage to one run in the third and worked around a two-out hit batter to keep the Ducks off the board in the fourth frame.
First baseman Danielle Gibson knocked a two-out single to center field in the bottom of the fourth frame to get a runner on base for the Devils. The single gave the freshman a five-game hitting streak, currently the longest streak on the ASU squad.
Two more solo shots later, Oregon secured a 6-0 lead in the top half of the 5th inning. The Sun Devils retaliated in the home half of the frame, however. DeNae Chatman stepped up to the plate a ripped a 1-1 pitch over the wall in center to get the Devils in the board. The home run marks the freshman's second on the season.
Oregon scored three more runs in the final two innings of the ballgame through a two-run home run in the sixth and a solo shot in the seventh to secure their 9-1 victory over the Devils.
