TEMPE, Ariz – The Sun Devil Baseball team fell to Oklahoma State, 3-2, in the final game of the three-game series at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The Sun Devils picked up their second consecutive series victory over Oklahoma State – also doing so in 2015 - thanks to a pair of victories to open up the weekend.
In his third appearance of the season and first career start, right hander Alex Marsh pitched three scoreless innings to start the game off for the Devils. Marsh now hasn't allowed a run in nine innings pitched during his 2018 campaign. Relievers Grant Schneider, Connor Higgins and Chaz Montoya combined to pitch the final 6.2 innings, allowing only one run to keep the Sun Devils in the game.
Despite the fact the Sun Devils offense finished with only eight hits, Lyle Lin and Gage Canning each picked up hits late in the game. Both now have a hit in all 12 games so far this season.
Freshman shortstop Drew Swift recorded four put-outs and three assists without committing an error. He now has not committed an error in 11 of 12 games, including the last eight.
The Devils got the scoring started in the third inning as Gage Canning led off the third inning with a walk, and was replaced on first base by Drew Swift who reached on a fielder's choice. Swift moved to second on a catcher's interference with Lyle Lin at bat. With two outs in the inning, Gage Workman would put the Sun Devils up 1-0 as he roped a single to right field, scoring Swift for his sixth RBI of the series.
The Cowboys responded in the next inning, as Jon Littell and Jake Taylor both delivered RBI singles to give the Cowboys a 2-1 lead over the Devils.
It would not take long for Arizona State to even things up, as a freshman sensation continued his torrid start to the season. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Spencer Torkelson recorded his team-leading seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to centerfield off Cowboys closer Carson Teel to knot the game up at two.
After a back-and-forth next few innings with neither team able to capitalize on their scoring chances, Oklahoma State would finally break through with their first run since the two-run fourth inning. They would re-take the lead in the top of the 10th on a two-out RBI-single from Ryan Cash. The Sun Devils offense would make things interesting in the bottom of the 10th, as they saw a pair of runners reach base off Cowboys closer Carson Teel. Teel would manage to retire the final batter via foul out, giving the Cowboys a 3-2 victory.
Up next, the Sun Devils will hit the road for a mid-week game against Pepperdine on Tuesday, March 6th at 2:00 P.M. MST. Later in the week, Arizona State returns to Tempe to host North Carolina-Wilmington in a three-game series beginning March 9th at 6:30 P.M. MST.
