TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State lacrosse team (6-7, 1-5 Pac-12) fell to the No. 16 Stanford Cardinal (8-3, 5-1 Pac-12), 20-8, Friday evening at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.
"We had a lot of players who were able to get some of their first opportunities on the field tonight," said head coach Courtney Martinez Connor. "We were super proud of efforts by players who produced even though it was their first time out. I think, overall, there is certainly a lot of things to work on, but we were certainly impressed with players who stepped up tonight."
The Sun Devil offense was led by freshman attacker Kate Dougherty who notched her first career hat trick. Freshman defender Maria Villanti netted a career high two goals of her own while junior co-captain Kerri Clayton added another. Freshmen Emily Glagolev and Julia Burns each posted a goal and an assist in the effort.
On the defensive end, goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau recorded 11 saves and seven ground balls, while the team caused nine Cardinal turnovers.
Stanford captain Kelsey Murray led both teams in scoring with four goals.
Up next, the Sun Devils host California in a 12 p.m. contest on Sunday, April 1. Admission is free for all fans and the game will be broadcasted live on the Pac-12 Network. Fans can follow along with Sun Devil Lacrosse's inaugural season by following the team on social media @SunDevilWLax.
