CLEVELAND – After six of eight Sun Devils advanced past the first round of the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships, #10 Jason Tsirtsis (149) and #1 Zahid Valencia (174) won their second matches of the day to advance to Friday morning's quarterfinals.
No. 8 Arizona State won the close matches early, winning four of their six first round matches by decision, as Anthony (165) and Zahid Valencia (174) tacked together back-to-back major decisions.
In the Second Round, Tsirtsis picked up a 4-3 decision over #7 Ryan Deakin of his previous school, Northwestern, while Z. Valencia added a second major decision with a convincing 18-5 victory over Central Michigan's #16 seed, Christian Brucki.
Senior Ali Naser's collegiate career and freshman Kordell Norfleet's season ended on Thursday, as Norfleet was one of just 16 freshmen to qualify for the national wrestling tournament this season.
In team scores, the Sun Devils sit just outside the top-10, reaching as high as No. 5 earlier in the day.
Friday will hold another sets of sessions – one in the morning/early afternoon and a second in the evening. The quarterfinals will take place at 11 am ET on ESPNU while the semifinals will be at 8 pm ET on ESPN. All matches on all mats will remain on Watch ESPN/ESPN3.
