Tempe, Ariz. - The Sun Devil Baseball team dropped a non-conference mid-week game against Arizona, 6-2, on Tuesday night in front of a season-high 4,587 fans.
Sophomore right-hander Alec Marsh was called on to start the game on the bump, displaying command of his curveball all night, using it to both get ahead and put away hitters. Marsh tied his career-long outing with 4.2 innings of work to go along with a career-high five strikeouts. Freshman sensation Spencer Torkelson blasted his 9th home run of the year to left and fellow freshman Alika Williams drove in a run as they powered the offensive attack.
The Sun Devils saw themselves in the driver's seat to score early when Torkelson reached in the first on an errant throw by the Wildcat third basemen. A Carter Aldrete walk would push Torkelson in scoring position, but ultimately ASU was unable to push the runner past home plate.
Another two-out opportunity was given in the fourth and ASU would take advantage. Taylor Lane started things off by driving a single through the left side and eventually being pushed over to second off a Trevor Hauver hit by pitch. Williams kept his steady bat going, as he lined one to center to earn his second RBI of his young collegiate career and put the Devils on the board.
Torkelson would bring in another run in the fifth when he reached down and golfed a low fastball deep over the left field fence. Torkelson's drive would be the ninth home run of his young season, pushing him just two home runs away from Barry Bonds freshman record of eleven.
Once again, ASU would threaten later in the inning when Aldrete and Gage Workman would reach putting runners on first and second base. Wildcat reliever Preston Price would retire the next batter to keep Arizona in front, 5-2.
Freshman outfielder Hunter Jump provide find hope for his club in the eighth by perfectly placing a double down the right side. The Sun Devils were unable to capitalize with the runner in scoring position as Wildcat closer Megill would go the final two innings to earn the save in the 6-2 victory.
Up Next: The Sun Devils open Pac-12 Conference play by welcoming Oregon to town for a weekend matchup. The three-game series is set to begin Friday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m. Follow the live stream of the game online via Pac-12 Plus.
