Spencer Torkelson Named Pac-12 Baseball Player of the WeekSpencer Torkelson Named Pac-12 Baseball Player of the Week
TEMPE – Sun Devil Baseball freshman phenomenon Spencer Torkelson has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office today.

Torkelson, currently ranked second nationally in home runs with seven this season, had three over the course of five games last week as he continues an incredible early-season tear that is well on its way to a potentially historic season.

Torkelson led the Sun Devils last week as Arizona State finished the week 3-2 over with a series win over Oklahoma State (2-1) and a midweek split against Long Beach State. He finished the weekend with a 1.250 slugging percentage and also led the Sun Devils with a .500 batting average (8-of-16) and six runs scored. Torkelson recorded eight hits with six going for extra bases in the five games.

The freshman had three home runs over the week, bringing his season total to seven, which is tied for second nationally. Torkelson's seven homers are only four shy of Barry Bonds' ASU freshman school record of 11 set in 1983. He has three more home runs than any other freshman in the country thus far this season.

The freshman from Petaluma, Calif., added three doubles and had a team-best seven RBIs with four walks. For the second time this season, Torkelson hit two homers in a game as he went deep twice against Long Beach State in the second game of the series.

Torkelson is batting .364 on the season, good for third on the Sun Devil roster, with 7 home runs and 5 doubles on his 16 total hits to date for a .955 slugging percentage.

This is the 147th all-time Pac-12 Player or Pitcher of the Week honor for Sun Devil Baseball and the first one of the season. He is the first freshman to earn a Player or Pitcher of the Week honor since Ryan Kellogg did so in 2013 and is the first position player to be named Player of the Week since RJ Ybarra that same season.

The Sun Devils take on Pepperdine on the road for a mid-week contest today at 2 p.m. PT (3 p.m. AZT) before returning home for a three-game series against UNC-Wilmington beginning Friday evening.
