TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil for Life and four-year Sun Devil football letterman John Joseph Zucco has passed away at the age of 92.
Zucco was football captain during his tenure at Arizona State, eventually receiving his Masters in Education, first teaching in Bagdad, Ariz. for two years while coaching their football team to its first state championship.
The Bostonian began teaching and coaching football at Tempe High in 1953, taking just three years to add another trophy to his case in 1956. Zucco won two state championships that year: one in football and one in track and field.
Making his mark at Tempe High, the school named the Tempe Relay track after himself and Coach Wynn. Zucco was incredibly loved by his peers and students.
Prior to his time as a Sun Devil, Zucco was an outstanding high school athlete who won state championships in ice hockey and football. He enlisted in the Marines during World War II and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Alaska (CB1) in the Pacific.
Zucco is survived by his five children Darcy, Tamara (Jackson), Perryn, Rocky, Corey Zucco, his sister-in-law Susan de Generes, son-in-law Steve Jackson, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
