TEMPE, Ariz – Arizona State senior Michaël Geerts was named the Pac-12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week according to an announcement by the conference office on Tuesday.
Geerts was recognized for his performance in the Sun Devils' Blue Gray Tennis Classic Championship this past weekend in which he went a perfect 3-0 in singles and 1-2 in tandem with doubles partner Thomas Wright.
Geerts, who is second on the team in wins with six on the season, was responsible for propelling the Devils past a previously undefeated No. 33 Alabama team to win the prestigious Blue Gray Tennis Classic title, the oldest collegiate tennis tournament in the country. The feat also netted him Blue Gray Tennis Classic Men's MVP honors.
With the championship game down to the wire tied 3-3 and he the only match still in play, Geerts dropped his first set against No. 113 Mazen Osama but took a tiebreaker second set 7-6 to even the advantage. In a nail-biting third set, Geerts stepped up to take the victory 6-4 and was dog-pilled by his teammates on the court soon after. The match-clinching point was Geerts' second on the season, with his first coming against San Diego.
In addition to his brilliant performance in Montgomery, Geerts is also on a six-game winning streak. The Belgian has not lost a singles match since Sun Devil men's tennis opened their spring against three of the toughest programs in the country in No. 25 Duke, No. 10 TCU and No. 7 Texas A&M.
This is the first time a Devil has won the award this season, but ASU's fifth honor in program history.
The Sun Devils (8-3) return to action next Thursday (5 p.m. MST) when they host No. 2 Stanford in the Pac-12 opener. The game at the Whiteman Tenis Center can be streamed on the ASU Live Stream.
