SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In a back-and-forth game the Arizona State lacrosse team (2-1) dropped a tough game to the San Diego State Aztecs (2-0), 14-13, Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Lacrosse Field for their first loss of the season.
"It was a tough battle today and the girls were certainly tested on both sides of the ball," said head coach Courtney Martinez Connor. "San Diego State is a tough and aggressive team but our girls showed they had a lot of fight of them even after being down three goals. I was happy with our fight until the very end and I hope this game will build upon our experience the next time we're in similar situation so that the outcome can be different."
The Sun Devils fought to the very end, scoring four goals in a row to take the lead with four minutes left in the game. Freshman Graci Fulkerson posted two of the final four goals and totaled a hat trick in the game with one coming in the first half.
Junior co-captain Kerri Clayton remained the team's leading scorer, hitting the back of the net four times. Freshman Emily Glagolev notched four points for the Sun Devils with two goals and two assists.
"Every game we're continuing to learn in-game situations during this inaugural season and the girls are becoming more confident as different situations are thrown at them," added Martinez Connor.
On the defensive side, the Sun Devils caused six Aztec turnovers and picked up eight ground balls, including four by freshman Maddy Hunter. Sophomore goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau recorded seven saves for the Sun Devils.
For the Aztecs, Harlowe Steele netted five goals on six shots and goalkeeper Katy Sharretts had nine saves.
Up next the Sun Devils hit the road again to go back East, traveling all the way to the Big Apple to take on Manhattan College and Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 24 and Monday, Feb. 26, respectively. Saturday's game has a slated 10 a.m. MST/12 p.m. ET start and will be livestreamed by gojaspers.com.
