TEMPE – The Sun Devil track and field team had another strong outing Friday as it competed as three groups at three different meets across the country.
At the meet closest to home, across the border at the Don Kirby Elite in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Magdalyn Ewen backed up her inclusion on the most-recent Bowerman Award watch list when she won the weight throw competition and broke her own school record with a heave of 22.26m/73-0.50 feet.
The mark keeps her at sixth nationally, but extends her lead on the MPSF with less than two weeks to go until the conference championships in Seattle.
Ewen also leads the conference and the nation in the shot put with her school record mark of 18.67m/61-3.50 feet.
Also in the women's weight throw at the Don Kirby Elite, Kaylee Antill topped her personal best with a throw of 19.47m/63-10.50 feet and finished third in the competition.
The Sun Devil women have two of the top-four weight throw marks in the MPSF, and freshman Samantha Noennig sits just outside the top-10 in 11th.
In the men's pole vault competition in New Mexico, Cole Riddle led the way for the Devils again with his mark of 5.30m/17-4.50 feet, but he wasn't the only freshman to make an impact in the event as Michael Chadwick came through with his best clearance as a Sun Devil when he topped 5.20m/17-0.25 feet.
Chadwick's mark made him the third Sun Devil of 2018 to break into the school's top-10 list. The freshman stands at eighth in ASU history.
Coach Ron Barela's vaulters make up half of the MPSF's top-10 best marks of the season with Riddle earning the highest spot on the list in second.
Meanwhile, a state over in the Lone Star State, the sprinters and jumpers got going at the Texas Tech Shootout.
Shaunie Morrison clocked an 8.28 in the 60-meter hurdles prelim to advance to the final with the best time of the opening round. In the final, she finished second with a time of 8.32 seconds. The 8.28 replaces her mark from earlier this season as the No. 7 time in school history, and ties her for fifth in the MPSF.
Jessica Barreira finished sixth in the triple jump at Texas Tech, and in the process recorded a personal best and the fourth-best mark in Sun Devil history with a leap of 12.48m/40-11.50 feet.
Marcus Howard improved on his personal best in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.42 in the prelim in Lubbock. He came into the day already ranked seventh in school history in the event, and his time at the Shootout moved him to just over a tenth of a second out of a tie for fifth all-time.
In the women's 400-meter dash, Sha'Maya Flanagan made it two straight weeks of personal bests when she crossed the line in fifth place with a 55.04. Although she is now 13th in the conference, she is less than a second off the top-five in the MPSF as nine women all have times between 55.04 and 54.29.
Up north in Iowa, Samantha Ortega ran herself into the top-10 of the conference with a 17:09.05 in the 5,000-meter run. She moved up five places in the final 900 meters of the race to finish 16th in her first competition back from illness.
The Devils return to competition in all three locations Saturday, and Ewen, Morrison and Flanagan will all be in action.
