GLENDALE, Ariz. -- In the final home game at Gila River Arena of the 2017-18 season, a strong start for Sun Devil Hockey was eclipsed by a breakdown to end the first period against Boston University on Friday night.
Despite outshooting the Terriers (12-11-2) 14-12 and nearly taking the early 1-0 lead, the Sun Devils (7-14-5) couldn't find a crease in first-round NHL draft pick Jake Oettinger. Boston swung the momentum with three goals in the final two and a half minutes for a 4-0 lead entering the second frame, and finished with an 8-0 victory.
"We have proven we can bounce back," said head coach Greg Powers. "We got dominated two weeks ago, 4-0, then we turn around the next night and win 4-0. Guys have to have a short memory. We are not a postseason team yet. We are not a national championship contending team. We are building a program and it is brick-by-brick. Success looks like this. That is the way it looks, it is life and that is how it works. We have to erase it and bounce back tomorrow and I think we will."
While they weren't trailing on the scoresheet just yet, the Sun Devils took a big hit early in the first period. Just over four minutes into play, freshman Johnny Walker took a five-minute major for interference as well as a game misconduct, which eliminated him from the remainder of the game. ASU would finish the remaining 56 minutes of the game without their leading scorer, thus ending his three-game point streak.
Before the end of the game, fellow freshman Dominic Garcia also received a double minor for elbowing and a 10-minute misconduct.
Between the pipes, sophomore Joey Daccord suffered one of his worst losses of the season, surrendering seven goals to the Terriers' potent offense. It was the second time this season he's done so, with the last coming against Penn State at Gila River Arena.
Freshman walk-on Mike DePhillips replaced Daccord for his NCAA debut in net, making 13 saves on 14 shots in the third period.
Boston's leading goal scorer Bobo Carpenter extended his lead with a hat trick -- three goals -- and an assist on the night. He's now totaled 16 goals and 11 assists on the season.
Potential top-five 2018 NHL draft pick, and son of former Arizona Coyotes' great Keith Tkachuk, also had quite the night with two goals.
The Sun Devils will aim to have a bounce back effort on Saturday night -- as they did after being shutout by UMass-Lowell two weeks ago -- at Oceanside for Senior Night. Seniors David Norris and Gage Hough will be honored pregame.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the game is sold out.
