Freshman Sun Devil Paul Chaplet qualified for the Latin America Amateur Championship, which is hosted by the Masters Tournament, The R&A, and the United States Golf Association. The event will be held at Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago, Chile, Jan. 20-23.
"Paul goes into this Latin American Amateur with his eyes wide open," said Sun Devil Head Coach Matt Thurmodn. "He knows what is at stake and he's really excited about it."
Chaplet is a Costa Rica native whose career ascended in April 2016 when he won the Latin American Amateur Championship. Just 16 at the time, he was the second-youngest golfer to compete in the Masters and the first Costa Rican to compete in the tournament.
"That Masters experience for him a couple years back was a life-changer and he would love to see what it would be like a couple years later," says Thurmond.
As a Sun Devil, Paul played all four events in the fall as he settled into college life. The highlight of Chaplet's collegiate career was being the low Sun Devil at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational (Fairfax, Calif., October 9-10) where he was in the hunt to win.
"He's connecting well with the team and getting his school work done too," add Thurmond. "His game continues to mature and I think we will see some really good things from him this spring."
The Sun Devils are all anxious to watch him this week in Chile. The winner will be invited to the 2018 Masters and receive exemptions into the final stages of qualifying for The Open and U.S. Open in 2018.
