WORCESTER, Mass. - The Arizona State men's hockey team may not be as thankful to be on the road for Thanksgiving, but they'll hunker down just 80 miles from where the Mayflower landed in Plymouth to take on Holy Cross.
While the Sun Devils (2-8-2) were basted and cooked by Penn State this past weekend, the team looks to embrace the spirit of family and come together for a full-serving of success back east. The Crusaders (5-3-5) return home, where they have yet to lose a game this season, after a 4-2 loss to Brown on Tuesday.
"We are looking to take this trip out east over a major holiday to come closer together as a family as we continue to grow this program into the future," said head coach Greg Powers. "Holy Cross is a very experienced team and will be a great opponent for us."
The meeting between the two squads is the first ever, and just the third program the Sun Devils have faced from the Atlantic Hockey Conference. ASU currently holds a 2-3-0 record all-time versus the Atlantic, including wins over Air Force and American International in 2016-17.
Sophomore goaltender Joey Daccord is the fortunate member to be going home for the holidays, as he grew up playing just a short drive from Worcester. It's perfect timing, as Daccord has been playing some of his best hockey as of late between the pipes. Over his past five starts, he's posted three 40-plus save performances, including a total of 87 between the two games against the Nittany Lions.
Fellow sophomore Brett Gruber is picking up speed after netting his second goal of the season in the final game against Penn State. Gruber's goal ties him in points with leading goal scorer, defenseman Jakob Stridsberg, at seven.
After starting the season on a remarkable heater with four goals and 10 assists in four games, the captain's line of Dylan Hollman, Louie Rowe, and Anthony Croston are striving to stuff their faces on the scoresheet this week after showing glimpses of the old trio in their most recent appearance on Saturday.
In each of the last six home games, Holy Cross put at least three rolls in the breadbasket per game en route to four wins and two ties. They're also only allowing two goals against per game in those six home match-ups with two shutouts.
The Crusaders' are led by senior forward Scott Pooley, who leads the team with 12 goals and two assists in 13 games.
Crusader goaltender Paul Berrafato boasts the conference's best save percentage (.929) and second-best goals against average (2.24), which also rank 7th and 15th, respectively.
Holy Cross becomes the fifth team this season the Devils have faced who are either ranked or receiving votes in the USCHO poll.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (EST)/5:05 p.m. (MST).
