FRESNO, Calif. – Charnea Johnson-Chapman scored a game- and career-high 16 points, one of five Sun Devils in double figures, to help the Arizona State women's basketball team defeat Fresno State 81-49 on Wednesday.

Courtney Ekmark had a career-high in scoring (14 points) for the second consecutive game, while Kianna Ibis, Robbi Ryan and Jamie Ruden added 10 points each for the Sun Devils (2-0), who shot 56 percent for the game.

Defensively the Sun Devils put the clamps on Fresno State as they allowed fewer than 50 points for the second time in as many games. The Bulldogs (1-1) connected on only 28 percent of their shots and scored 12 or fewer points in three of the four quarters.

ASU had a 42-25 advantage on the boards and was able to convert 12 of its offensive rebounds into 12 second-chance points. Sabrina Haines had a career-high nine rebounds to lead ASU's effort on the glass.

Ekmark helped set the tone for the game as she came out and knocked down all five of her shots and scored 10 points to help ASU take an 18-12 lead after the first quarter.

The Sun Devils broke open the game in the second and third quarters as they outscored Fresno State 49-21 during the 20-minute stretch. Ruden (5-6 FGs/10 points) and Ibis (4-7 FGs/2-2 FTs/10 points) combined to score all 20 of their points while shooting a combined 69 percent (9-13 FGs) in the two quarters.

Wednesday's game was a homecoming for freshman Bre'yanna Sanders, who scored 1,258 career points and grabbed nearly 1,000 rebounds during her career at Clovis West High School. As a senior in 2017, Sanders was named the Fresno Bee Co-Player of the Year after helping lead her squad to a 34-2 record and the CIF State Open Division title.

With its win over Fresno State the Sun Devils improved to 42-7 in non-conference games since 2013, the best mark in the Pac-12 since that time.

The Sun Devils return to action on Saturday (2 p.m. MT) when they host Sacramento State in their third annual #KeepTheBeat Game for heart health awareness. Taste of Tempe, a food tasting event with heart healthy choices, and a heart health expo will take place in the arboretum (NE of Wells Fargo Arena) beginning at noon on Saturday.
