SARASOTA, Fla. – Capping another successful regular season in Sun Devil triathlon's second year as a team, ASU won the team title at the East Regional Qualifier as part of the Sarasota-Bradenton Triathlon Festival.
Due to weather conditions in the area, the race and all races at the festival were turned into duathlons which features a run, bike, run format. The first run portion was 2.5 km, followed by a 20km bike, and capped with a 5km run.
Freshman Kyla Roy was the top finisher for the Sun Devils – in third place – while Sarah Quintero and Rebecca Naughton finished fifth and seventh, respectively. Roy's third-place finished matched the best finish of her collegiate career, also in the team's first race of the season in Naperville, Ill.
"The team competed very well and won another regional championship, battling along with their competitors in the brutal Florida heat and humidity," said head coach Cliff English. "They took it in stride with the triathlon was changed to a duathlon, worked together as a team on the bike, and really made the other competitors work hard for their end results. Our main goal now is to continue improvement upon our current fitness leading into the national championships."
Queens University of Charlotte finished second while East Tennessee State finished third.
The Sun Devils now turn their sights to the national championship, hosted in Tempe at Tempe Town Lake and in the surrounding area, on Nov. 5.
Prior to the collegiate race, the inaugural Ignite the Fork age group triathlon will take place. Triathletes can register for the age group race here: https://www.regonline.com/builder/site/Default.aspx?EventID=2024404.
