HAMILTON, N.Y. – Turnovers and an early deficit again proved costly for Sun Devil hockey on the road, as the Colgate Raiders handed the Maroon & Gold their first shutout loss of the season at The Class of 1965 Arena on Friday night.
Two turnovers in the offensive zone and a strange goal to open the game for the Raiders (3-2-2) led to the 3-0 loss for ASU (1-5-1). It is the first time the Sun Devils have been shutout since Nov. 26, 2016 against RPI.
"Bottom line is our guys just weren't ready to play tonight," said head coach Greg Powers. "The guys we need to step up just aren't getting the job done and are taking penalties in situations they simply can't if we want to find success. Travel can't be an excuse and our leaders have to step up and execute."
Sixteen minutes into the first period, Colgate's Tyler Jeanson threw a rebound off the end board to the corner of the net from below the goal line. The puck narrowly found its way between sophomore goaltender Joey Daccord's skate and the post for the 1-0 Raider lead.
After several opportunities were stymied by Colgate goaltender Colton Point, his team gave him a comfortable 2-0 lead with a power-play tally with two seconds remaining in the second frame. Sophomore forward John Snodgrass fired a quick shot from the slot that was redirected in front by fellow sophomore Bobby McMann passed Daccord.
The Raiders won the special teams battle overall, killing all five of ASU's chances and netting on one of their five power-play opportunities. Colgate also committed themselves to blocking shots, denying 25 of ASU's shots.
Midway through the third, a blind pass from behind the Sun Devil net found the tape of Evan Peterson's stick in the slot and he made ASU pay. His first goal of the season made it 3-0.
ASU will again have their shot at redemption on Saturday with a 4 p.m. (ET)/1 p.m. (AZ) puck drop against the Raiders. The 2016-17 series between the two resulted in a split.
