Boulder, Colo. -- Arizona State women's soccer suffered their second straight road loss, falling 3-0 to Colorado Thursday afternoon at Prentup Field.
"I thought we controlled the middle of the field for the first 45 minutes, but Colorado has a lot of quality in both penalty areas," head coach Graham Winkworth said. "That part of the field is where the game is won or lost. We got beat today in our one-on-one matchups in both penalty areas, but played some nice soccer in the middle part of the pitch. We have got to work hard and show a little more quality in both ends of the pitch. Today we didn't do that."
The Buffaloes (8-5-3, 2-4-1), looking to snap a three-game slide, got off to a fast start in Thursday's contest scoring their first goal in just the fifth minute of play. The Buffalo offense would not stop there, as the home side would fire in two more first half goals to hold a 3-0 advantage entering the half.
The Sun Devils came out of the break looking to cut into the Colorado lead, firing in nine second half shots, but the Buff's defense proved to be too stout en route to their tenth shutout of the season.
"Colorado has got a lot of good players," Winkworth added. "They are a tough team for anybody. One thing we went into the game looking for is not giving up easy set pieces, because Kornieck is extremely dangerous in the air. There is a reason she plays for the national team, she is very talented. We gave up two soft corner kicks in the early part of the game and they scored on one of them. Good players "
The Sun Devils received help on defense as both Nikki Panas and Angela Boyle returned to the back line, but it proved to not be enough as Colorado was able to bolster their home record to a 5-3-1 mark on the year, with two of their losses coming against No. 1 UCLA and No. 20 California.
"We have got to find a way as coaches to get our team better in the final third," said Winkworth. "Once we get to that final third, we have got to be brave and tenacious enough to have a go. We have got another opportunity on Sunday and we have got to keep things positive and give it a go."
ASU returns to the pitch on Sunday, wrapping up their road trip with a match at Utah. First kick in Sunday's match is slated for 1 p.m. AZT. Fans can follow all of the action from the 2017 soccer season by following @SunDevilSoccer on Twitter.
